Ancillary 2 - Final Billboard Poster

Here is the final version of my poster as you can see I changed the font to the same font as my ITV title card to keep the branding of the institution the same throughout my products.

Ancillary 2 - Poster Draft

Here is the first draft of my poster which I had created I thought overall that the poster was good and help show the dullness of my soap but the font used was not the same as I used for my ITV title card at the end of my trailer.

Tuesday 13 December 2011

Billboard with ITV logo

Here I added the ITV logo on the bottom left hand corner as this was the institution which would broadcat my soap and the majority of existing ITV billboard posters have the logo in the same position as mine

Billboard Poster Background

I decided to just create the background for the poster as within my group we have created our own trailers with different name like mine is called Skylar Grove. I thought this would make it easier for the rest of our group to edit the poster so that they could make it there own and promote their own soap.

Ancillary 1 - Final Magazine Cover

The overall layout of the magazine was created by Jack Kane but I had to change George Street to Skylar Grove as Skylar Grove is the name of my soap and also I had to change the time when the soap is on so there is continuity within my products.

Ancillary 1 - Edited Front Cover

This was created by Jake Kane. As you see in this edited version of the magazine the barcode and the price has been placed on to the cover of the magazine fullfilling the conventions of a magazine front cover.

Ancillary 1 - Magazine Cover First Draft

This was created by Jack Kane, as you see the layout of the magazine is quite good for the first attempt and you can see clearly the coventions used like in TV & Satellite Week but it is missing the barcode and the price of the magazine.

Planning - Billboard After Taken Photos

After we took pictures for our ancillaries we decided that it would be Jack and Aneesa on the poster and so we planned what the poster wouls look like after this decision

Initial Planning - Billboard

Initially Kate, Aneesa and I planned the poster so that Kate and Jack would be the characters on the poster as this was one of the most captivating storylines that we had within our trailers

Ancillary Planning - Magazine Covers

Here is the planning for ancillary 1 - the magazine cover which was done by Jack Kane

Existing Magazine Cover

Q2
As you can see an existing magazine cover has certain conventions to make it a quality magazine cover:
  • Masterhead
  • Main title anchored on main star
  • Barcode
  • Strap on the top
  • Date of issue
  • Button
  • Clearly laid out
  • Main title stands out to show the reader it is the main story
  • Question to include the reader
  • Day and channel when program is on
  • Other stories that could interest the reader
  • Can see all the characters clearly
  • Bright house colours to grab reader attention
  • Main character is looking straight at the camera to engage the reader
  • Website
  • Articles promoting different types of programmes
These conventions can help when planning and creating our magazine cover so that we have a conventional magazine cover within our products

Shushana Brennan 4106 Skylar Grove Final Project (Before Feedback)

Audience Feedback Q3
From the screening session which we did I got relevant feedback in which helped me re-edit my soap trailer to make it the best of my ability.

Here is the overall positive feedback:
  • As my soap tailer, compared to the other trailers in which my group created, I had more conflict between Paul (Jack) and Kayleigh (Kate) made my trailer more dramatic, and more darker.
  • It feels like a trailer for Emmerdale.
  • The ITV title card at the end of the trailer matched the brand of the institution.
Then I got some critical feedback in which I could make my soap trailer better:
  • It needs to run more linear
  • The edits need to be more tighter to create emphasis on the drama within the trailer
  • There were quite a few continuity errors within my trailer which confused the audience slightly as at one point Paul (Jack) leaves the living room but then later on he is back in the living room talking to Kayleigh (Kate) so it was said that I need to changed the order of my edits in my trailer.

Shushana Brennan 4106 Skylar Grove Rough Cut

  • I don't think the song fits with the soap (Sara Bareilles- Kaleidoscope Heart), it's has a slight happy tone to it and that doesn't quite work for my trailer as my soap has a lot of sadness within it, I am deciding on whether I should change it.
  • If I do change my music this means I may have to change some of the foootage used and the timeline of the footage within my trailer so that it fits in with my new music.

Day of Filming

On filming day we realised that we could film all of our scenes within the location that we were filming, for the office scene initially we were going to film the office scene at Aquinas college in the media office but as Jo Boyle had an office/study within her house that we were using for other scenes we decided that we would use that office instead.
Also for the scene on the bench with Biance and Geoff (Shushana and Kris) initially we were going to film in a car park near our college but with the location where we were filming other scences, to our advantage, there was scope to change this so that we could keep all of our filming local and reflect the conventional ideals of existing soaps where the basis of the soap is where it is located.

Dallas 2012 Trailer

  • First there is the establishing shot of Dallas and its glass skyscrapers again reminding us of the wealth in which the old characters have and the new characters will get, it also shows the wealth has increased since the series has finished.
  • There are title cards in which answer questions that the characters ask throughout the trailer (Bobby "All those fights, over you and oil in South Folk We laid waste to everything in our path, J.R., and for what?" then the title card says MONEY).
  • "Money" coming toward the reader in a gold font showing importance of money and power, makes the audience feel as though money is the most important thing
  • Cue cards run throughout the trailer giving the same effect as the "Money" cue card, showing conflict, arguments and disagreements within families and making the audience feel as though the text in the cue card is the most important thing rather than family and friends
  • When Bobby is taking to JR the lighting is creating shadows and the light seemes to becoming from the window in front of JR as JR is a shaded character and it shows that the oil world is a men's world and the women are trophies.
  • The room could also be dark as it is very hot in Texas and so it is cooler in a dark room.
  • The decor in JR's office shows the wealth in which he has and also shows that he still has that wealth and will be giving that wealth to his son.
  • At the beginning of the trailer we establish the old characters from the original series then we establish the new charatcers which are the old charatcer's son's/daughters even grand son/daughters.
  • Bobby "I'm sick to death of this family devowering itself over money" which make him the moral compass - the good guy and the fact that he is talking to JR.
  • Storyline split into "snippets" to show audience different storylines throughout the soap .
  • Montage shows glimpses of the charaters and the storyline to make you want to watch it as you want to know what is happening.
  • At the beginning non-diegetic soundtrack creates tension and the edits match the beat, it tells audience how to "read" the scene  Then the original theme tune kicks the song is designed for an older audience (the original audience who may have watched the original series), relating back and bringing memories from the original Dallas and also so that the new audience get intoduced to the theme tune and are able relate to it like the original audience.

    Conventions of Soap Dialogue
  • Bobby "All those fights, over you and oil in South Folk We laid waste to everything in our path, J.R., and for what?  this part of the dialogue sets out the plot line for the trailer and also set out the beginning of the context of the trailer as well.
  • 10 SECONDS: Bobby Ewing's son: "Oil's the past John-Ross" JR's son: "I couldn't disagree more". The fact that the Money cue card is used before this clip portrays the conflict between families and their disagreements
